Soaring eagle lodge
LINK is a 3 week internship all juniors must do to graduate. Every junior got to pick there internship so I decided to choose a fly fishing lodge near the Navajo Dam community in northeastern New Mexico. If i could put this whole experience into a phrase it would be "Hard work pays off". So far what I've been doing is general lodge up keeping. with some fishing every once in a while. The fishing is definitely the main reason I picked this as my internship and I've been learning a lot so far. In the morning all the guides take the clients out until about 4 pm and from 4 pm to 6 pm what I've been doing is hanging out with the guides getting some fishing lessons until I clock out. the rest of the day Im doing a bunch of chores around the property making sure everything is taken care of and looks good. on of the main projects I've tackled other than cleaning was installing bricks into a step going to a deck where clients can hang out after a long day of fishing.
Week 2
the second week of my internship was definitely the busiest. I did a lot of manual labor this week. a lot of it insisted of cleaning, raking, and gardening. But the other time spent was on fishing. learning new techniques and becoming a better fishermen in all. The scheduling of all of this was pretty unique. the owner of the lodge and also my mentor let me stay at one of the empty cabins for 3 day blocks. What this looked like was wake up early and get to the lodge at 6:45-7:00 in the morning and work until 6:00 at night. I would then go back to my cabin and sleep a good nights sleep and do it all over in the morning. 11 hour days are no joke. but that also gave me a lot of free time in between the blocks which made rest days very easy.
week 3
Week 3 was not very eventful. most of my time was spent painting my mentors house. I did spend some time in the fly shop talking fishing with the customers. I spent some time cleaning float lines and organizing the products but other than that I didn't do much retail work. painting the house was long and hard. being out in the sun and high winds all day was tough but it gave me some personal time to think and be by myself. I didn't have enough time to finish but I almost got the front face done. it was hard to do alone but I did it the best that I could.

final link project
Me and two other students all collaborated to make a fly fishing catalog for the Animas river. One worked with the GIS mapping company for Durango and one worked at a fly shop. My friend who worked with the GIS company designed a map of the Animas river and found fishing holes using river depth. I, using my experience being around fly guides throughout my internship provided useful fishing tips and techniques for all of the different fishing holes the were mapped out. and my other friend who worked at the fly shop provided useful flies to use on the different sections and fishing holes.
final link reflection
Overall I had a great time doing my internship. It taught me how to manage my time, keep a level head, and how to work hard. I kept this mentality of hard work pays off because after I was done with all of my hard work i was able to fish. and it taught me how to set short term goals for myself and reward myself afterwards. it was very fun =)
